A Notary Public is a state official who works independently to notarize signatures on documents, administer oaths and affirmations, certify copies of certain documents, affidavits, depostitions, and protests. The notary public identifies the document signer an records the information in a notary journal. Each state has different laws and not all states require indentification.

A notary public cannot notarize a Will. However, a notary public can witness you sign your Will. You need two witnesses for your Will to be notarized.

A signer should have valid government issued identification such as a current drivers license, state ID, or passport.

Generally, you used to be able to go to a bank, but recently the banks do not have a notary onboard, and an appointment is required. There are UPS offices that might have a Notary Public available, but they are not highly trained and most often there is long lines.
