Frequently asked Notary questions.
What is a Notary Public?
A Notary Public is a state official who works independently to notarize signatures on documents, administer oaths and affirmations, certify copies of certain documents, affidavits, depostitions, and protests. The notary public identifies the document signer an records the information in a notary journal. Each state has different laws and not all states require indentification.
Can a Notary Public Witness My Will?
A notary public cannot notarize a Will. However, a notary public can witness you sign your Will. You need two witnesses for your Will to be notarized.
What form of ID do I need?
A signer should have valid government issued identification such as a current drivers license, state ID, or passport.
Where do I go to get a form notarized?
Generally, you used to be able to go to a bank, but recently the banks do not have a notary onboard, and an appointment is required. There are UPS offices that might have a Notary Public available, but they are not highly trained and most often there is long lines. There are many professional mobile notaries near you and charge a travel fee. (I do not charge a travel fee within 5 miles from my home in Murrieta and Temecula border near me.)
